He’d protect her from any threat…
But what if the biggest threat is him?

Doctor Anne Nichols is back in Oak Creek, Wyoming, only because she has no other options. Here, she was always the shy, stuttering girl, invisible to everyone.

Except Zac Mackay. The very reason she left in the first place.

Zac’s years in Special Forces taught him survival skills, and he’s created a company—Linear Tactical—to teach those skills to others, so they never have to live in fear.

Then why is Annie, the last person he’d ever want to hurt, afraid of him

Zac’s determined to wipe the fear from the eyes of the woman who has never been far from his mind. And fix the mistakes—his mistakes—that put that look there in the first place.

But a predator has set his sights on Annie. And now survival skills will become much more than lessons…

Review by Barbara

This is one of those book that makes you say, “I can’t wait until the next book in the series releases”. You know where the author gives you a great beginning storyline with characters that just grab a hold of your heartstrings and just enough backstory that gets you excited about what’s to come while not taking away from the current book.

This is Zac and Annie’s story. Zac and his friends have moved back to his small hometown after many years serving in Special Ops and have opened a Linear Tactical, a place where they train people self-defense, weapons training and other special courses. Zac is haunted by the tragic death of his wife and young son as well as a drunken night shortly after his death where he spent the night with his wife’s best friend, Annie. As for Annie, she was not popular as a kid, people made fun of her stutter so she stayed in the shadows and had few friends. Annie she left town after that night night with wonderful night with Zac because he broke her heart by telling her to get out and never come back. Fast forward to the present, Annie has moved back to the town, is the head ER Doctor and lucky for her no one recognizer her grown up. Well no one but Zac when he’s admitted to the ER after wrecking his motorcycle. Zac is not happy about seeing because he feels guilty about what they did but also because he can’t remember all the details. But when he sees the fear in Annie’s eyes at seeing him again, Zac is even more guilty and confused. Zac and Annie have both thought about each other over the years and coming face to face again stirs up a lot of emotions the both try to hide as they work on rebuilding their friendship. But Zac still wants to understand the fear he saw in her eyes.

The story really takes off from here. We meet the guys of Linear Tactical and watch them in action. Especially when danger comes to the area and the Sheriff needs their expertise. But what happens when danger hits a little too close to home? During all the excitement we also learn what happened in the past with Zac and Annie. Can these two possibly put the past behind them and become the friend they both need? This is a very exciting story and one I Highly Recommend. 2 Thumbs up for a great start to the series and this reader is Anxiously awaiting book 2 in the Linear Tactical series.

What a start to what promises to be one fantastic series! Zac and Annie's story begins with a very rocky and painful start. After losing his family 6 years prior and throwing Annie out of his room and telling her to leave and never come back after a drunken night and taking something from her that he would have no memory of the next day, they are back face to face. This time Zac is a patient in the ER and Annie is the doctor that is tending to him. No one knew who she was as her last name had changed, and in the past Annie was always unnoticeable, always shy and shying away from crowds. But stepping into that ER room, after clearing the nurses who gathered to be in the same room with the hot Linear Tactical team, she is face to face with the man who she had quietly loved for years, the one her best friend had married and had a child with, the one they both lost years ago, the one who broke her like no other man had ever done, not even her ex-husband. Zac sees her and notices the fear in her eyes. Not just fear of this situation because she turns on the professional side of herself and handles herself well, but it is the fear of him that he sees and is confused. What was that all about? But Zac has always thought about Annie, even imagined being with her in his mind. Now she was here, but he needed to know what made her fear him? As they begin their friendship, Annie tells him that the past was the past, but he isn't comfortable with that because he truly cannot remember what happened that night after a certain point. But that will have to be put on hold until the current event of a couple of rapes have been solved. Danger is lurking and he wants to make sure that Annie is safe, but he also wants to get to know her more, to be with her, to find out once again what happened. And, that is all you get! I'm not going to say anything else about this story because you need to open the mysteries yourself.

The characters are so very well written and so likable that you will want to move to their small town yourself, just to know these people. There are so many supporting characters that you will attach yourself to, besides the team themselves, there's Wavy, Riley, the Mayor..a trip herself, and the woman you will hate the most until you don't, Mia and many others. But it is Zac and Annie who will steal the show in this book because when they get together, the heat will definitely rise from the pages.

A wonderful beginning to this series, that will give you a glimpse into the personalities of the rest of the team while giving you the lead character's story. Do not miss this one! I highly recommend this book!

Excerpt

“I was here a couple of years ago, but only for a day or two,” Anne told Zac, looking away. She had booked a room out of Oak Creek both times she’d dared come back. The thought of staying at The Mayor’s Inn had been too painful. She couldn’t even look at that hotel without feeling sick to her stomach.

And she’d avoided everyone—particularly Zac—as much as possible. Just in case his words about not coming back were still true. She tried to swallow the panic that threatened to overwhelm her. Maybe he still felt that way now, even though he hadn’t said anything at the hospital.

“There.” He pointed at her. “That look that just came into your eyes. I saw it at the hospital. It’s like you’re afraid of me, Annie.” He took a step closer and she instinctively one back. One of his eyebrows shot up, letting her know she’d proved his point. “Do you think I’m going to hurt you?”

“No.” Not physically. She’d never worried that he’d hurt her that way, despite having five inches and probably fifty pounds—all muscle—on her.

But he was right. She couldn’t continue living in Oak Creek with them ignoring everything that had happened that night. What had been said. What had been done. Maybe she would’ve tried to, and to avoid Zac forever, if he hadn’t ended up in her ER.

But the truth was, there weren’t enough bushes in this town for her to jump into. She was going to run into Zac. A lot.

Sometimes all you could do was face the past.

She pulled a breath in. “I’m not scared of you. I mean, I know you would never hurt me physically. For crying out loud, you wrecked your motorcycle rather than hit a dog.” She’d meant for her laugh to seem breezy, but it just sounded stilted. “But yeah, I mean, we can’t pretend like that night never happened. The stuff we did. Stuff you...we said.”

His eyes narrowed. “That night we spent together after Becky died.”

“Yeah. That night.” As if they’d had another. “The bottom line is, I can’t leave here, Zac. No matter what you said then, or even if you feel the same way now.”

He shook his head, brows furrowing. “I don’t expect you to leave. You’re obviously a respected doctor, more than competent. Why would you think I wanted you to leave?”

Some of the tension she’d been carrying since his arrival in the ER began to ease. He was right. Something said in grief and anger six years ago didn’t necessarily hold true all this time later. She was silly for thinking it did. “Okay, well, it’s good to know you don’t feel the same as you did back then.”

He took a single predatory step closer, and she tensed again. “I said something that night to make you think you needed to leave?”

She stared at him, her mouth flopping open like some sort of fish. “You don’t remember what you said?”

Those words would be engrained in her memory forever.

Get out and don’t come back.

He rubbed his forehead. “That whole night is fuzzy for me.”

I can’t even bear to look at you. You just betrayed the only person in this town who ever wanted you here.

Tossing her naked into the hallway before flinging her clothes at her.

“What do you remember?” She forced the words past a throat that seemed to have dried up.

His hand moved to the back of his neck. “Honestly, not much at all. It’s sort of a blur.”

She retreated a step from him again. That night had been the most important night of her life. The best. The worst. It had changed the very fabric of her being.

And it was sort of a blur for him.
